What is email security?
Email security refers to the collective measures used to secure access to and content of an email account or service. It protects against phishing, spam, malware, business email compromise, and other email-based threats.
Common email threats
- Phishing: Deceptive emails designed to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information
- Spam: Unsolicited bulk email, often carrying malware or scams
- Business Email Compromise (BEC): Targeted attacks impersonating executives
- Malware attachments: Emails containing malicious files or links
Email security measures
Organizations protect email using spam filters, email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), encryption, multi-factor authentication, and employee security awareness training.
